Take the Challenge!

July 20-28, 2019

The Buy Local Challenge was created by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission and has since become a statewide program. The Challenge encourages all Marylanders to eat at least one locally grown, harvested, or produced product each day of the Buy Local Challenge Week, which is always the last full week of July.

The Buy Local Pledge: "I pledge to enjoy at least one Maryland grown product every day during Buy Local Week." Sign the pledge

Buy Local Cookout

The 12th annual Governor's Buy Local Cookout will take place July 18, 2019 at Government House in Annapolis to kick off the Buy Local Challenge. Attendance at this event is invitation only. Governor Hogan invited chefs to submit original recipes for the cookout. The invitation was open to Maryland farmer(s)/chef teams. A "chef" is a person with culinary training. Recipes from students currently in culinary classes were also considered. Recipes reflect creative ways to use Maryland-grown or Maryland-raised products. See the 2019 Recipe Guidelines.

The Buy Local Cookbooks: All entries submitted are included in a Recipes from the Buy Local Cookout cookbook. We are pleased to present the 2019 cookbook below as well as all past cookbooks for free download. See reprint permission policy.

The Maryland's Best website, maintained by the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Marketing Section, has the latest information about what's in season and how to find local products and farmers markets near you. Eat local!
