The Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, is extremely destructive to hardwood trees, with the potential to wipe out entire populations of trees in a short period of time. This beetle has not been found in Maryland. The only known infestations in the United States are in New York City and Chicago, resulting in the removal of hundreds of valuable street and parkland trees.

Quick identification and containment is vital to controlling this pest. It is important that homeowners, arborists and anyone else finding a beetle that looks like it may be an Asian longhorned beetle contact MDA immediately.

First save the beetle, even if it is already dead. Place the beetle in a secure container. Immediately call MDA at 410-841-5922.
